Trains

In the UK there are many train operators across the country. This can be confusing when planning a journey. In the UK it is often much cheaper to buy your tickets in advance and specify the times you would like to travel.

If you buy your ticket on the day it will be much more expensive. You also need to check when the peak times are; if you can travel outside these times you will save money.

If you are under 26 you can apply for a Young Persons Railcard which gives you a 33% discount on most tickets.

If you have a family you can apply for a Family Railcard which also offers big discounts.

If you are 60 or over you can apply for a Senior Railcard.

You can ask at your local train station about booking tickets in advance or applying for a railcard.

Buses

In the UK there are many different bus companies and services in your area.

Catching a bus:

When you are waiting for a bus and you see it approaching, you must put out your hand and wave for the bus to stop otherwise it may go past you.

It can sometimes be cheaper to buy a return instead of two single tickets; ask the bus driver for more information.

You often need the right money when you pay the driver for your ticket, so ensure you have some change.

You must keep your ticket for the entire journey in case a ticket inspector asks to see it.

If you are at a bus stop and want to check when the next bus is arriving you can text the bus stop code on your mobile phone to 84268. A return message will let you know when the next three buses should be there.

Taxis

In the UK most taxis can either be taken from a taxi rank (a place where taxis queue for you, for example at a train station or in the town centre), or booked by phone or at a taxi office.

You must only travel in licensed taxis – you can check this by looking at the rear of the taxi to make sure the information plate matches the taxi. If you are unsure do not get in.

To book a taxi you should call the taxi company and say where you are and where you would like to go to.

To find your local taxi companies look in your local Yellow Pages, the Phone Book or search on the Internet.

It is a good idea to save some taxi numbers onto your mobile phone in case you need a taxi when you’re away from home
