The majority of people in Suffolk are from a Christian background but there are also Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs as well as Baha’is, Humanists, Jains, Zoroastrians and Pagans. People from all these different faiths usually get on well together here, and try to work together for the good of the whole community. Most Churches have notice boards outside or just inside the entrance with information about times of services as well as names of priests and ministers and their phone numbers. You could contact them to introduce yourself or you could just turn up at a service. You will usually find a warm welcome, and help and advice if you need it. There are usually other events (social, cultural and educational) taking place in Church Halls during the week, some of which are run by community groups and are open to everyone. In Ipswich there are two Mosques, a Buddhist Centre and a Gurdwara; there are also other places in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft, where Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Pagans, and people of other faiths and cultures meet regularly for worship and friendship. There are Churches and Chapels in towns and villages. Wherever you live in Suffolk there are places which can help you make contact with people of your faith and culture. The Public Libraries, the Citizens Advice Bureaus, and various voluntary and community organisations have lists of useful contacts. You can also use the Internet to search for information. |
