Your Responsibility

Smoke alarms

All rented houses must have smoke alarms fitted. Ideally there should be two, one on the upstairs landing and one in the hallway or room next to the kitchen. It is your responsibility to check that your smoke alarms work; they should be tested weekly.

Smoke alarms can be purchased from most good DIY or home stores.

It is advisable to make a fire escape plan for your household in the event of a fire.

Overcrowding

If your accommodation is much too small for your household you may be considered to be living in overcrowded conditions under the law.
As a general rule:
1 room = 2 people
2 rooms = 3 people
3 rooms = 5 people
4 rooms = 7.5 people
5 or more rooms = 2 people per room.

In some cases the council can prosecute your landlord and your landlord may be able to evict you.

Noise

There is a general rule to keep noise down after 11pm

Recycling

Recycling is extremely important in the UK. All District and Borough Councils operate their own recycling and waste management systems to meet strict European Union targets. It is very important to find out how to recycle in your local area.

Each area has a different collection day and time - it is best to check with your landlord, a neighbour or the local council about how the collection system works in your area.

Please Note - It is an offence to keep your bins on the pavement outside your house on days that are not collection days. See information from your local council for details.
