In the UK you have the right to work in safety without harassment because of race, nationality, disability, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation or union membership. It is the responsibility of your employer to make sure you are safe at work. Trade Unions are there to help workers with their rights and to improve terms and conditions of work, including: working hours, pay and the minimum wage, health and safety at work, contracts, legal advice and support, training and education, discrimination and redundancy. All unions belong to the TUC (Trades Union Congress), which is the national governing body. Everyone is entitled to join a Trade Union. To be a member you need to pay a subscription to the union on a monthly or yearly basis and in return the union can help with work issues. In most workplaces there is a Trade Union Representative (Rep). You can ask your fellow workers who this person is and they can tell you more about the union and becoming a member. |
